New GMC Trucks in Cathedral City, CA

Four trucks, four different jobs. That is the short version of the GMC lineup, and picking between them comes down to weight, size and whether the truck runs on fuel or a battery.

Here at Jessup Auto Plaza Buick GMC, our sales staff spends most of its time on that first question. A truck that tows a small utility trailer twice a month and a truck that pulls a fifth-wheel every week are not the same purchase, even though both start in the same showroom.

Comparing the Four GMC Trucks

Truck Class Starting MSRP Max Towing Built For
Canyon Midsize Tight parking, lighter trailers, off-pavement use in AT4 and AT4X form
Sierra 1500 Full-size half-ton $38,300 9,400 lbs with TurboMax; up to 13,300 lbs with the Duramax diesel The broadest range of work and family use, from fleet Pro to Denali Ultimate
Sierra 2500HD Three-quarter-ton heavy duty Heavier trailers than a half-ton should carry, still a workable daily driver
Sierra 3500HD One-ton heavy duty, dually available The heaviest fifth-wheel and gooseneck loads
Sierra EV Full-size electric half-ton Half-ton capability without fuel stops, paired with home charging

Towing ratings move with cab, bed, axle ratio, drivetrain and hitch type, so treat every figure as belonging to a specific build rather than to the model. Starting prices exclude destination freight, taxes, title, license and dealer fees.

Sierra 1500

The half-ton. Sierra 1500 handles most of what people buy a truck for — trailers, gear, a crew cab full of passengers, and daily driving that has to stay comfortable. Trims run from the work-focused Pro through Elevation and AT4 to Denali Ultimate at the top, so the same truck can show up as a fleet unit or as the nicest vehicle in the driveway.

Pricing opens at $38,300 for the Pro. The TurboMax engine tows up to 9,400 pounds; properly equipped with the Duramax 3.0L Turbo-Diesel, the Sierra 1500 tows up to 13,300 pounds. Read through the 2026 Sierra 1500 trim walk if this is where you are starting.

Sierra HD: 2500HD and 3500HD

Heavy duty is the answer when the trailer gets heavier than a half-ton should handle. Sierra 2500HD steps up towing and payload substantially over the 1500 and remains manageable as a daily driver. Sierra 3500HD goes further, with a dual-rear-wheel configuration available for the heaviest fifth-wheel and gooseneck loads.

The gap between 2500HD and 3500HD is narrower than most buyers expect on paper and wider than expected in practice. Ride quality, turning radius and how the truck parks all change with the dually. Bring the loaded weight of your trailer and the tongue or pin weight if you know it — those two numbers settle the decision faster than anything else.

Canyon

Midsize, and the right call for anyone who finds a full-size truck awkward in a parking structure. Canyon still tows and hauls meaningfully, and the AT4 and AT4X trims carry genuine off-pavement hardware rather than an appearance package. Buyers replacing a half-ton with a Canyon usually cite maneuverability first and fuel economy second.

Sierra EV

The electric half-ton. Sierra EV keeps the truck part of the job — bed, towing, four-wheel drive — and swaps the powertrain. Range depends on configuration and drops when towing, the same way fuel economy does on a gas truck, so the conversation is about how far the truck actually travels between charges on a normal week.

Home charging is part of the purchase. GM Energy equipment can be paired with the truck, and some configurations can send power back to a house. The GM Energy home charging options page covers how that works.

Work Trucks for Businesses From Palm Springs to the Pass

Commercial buyers work with the Business Elite Truck Center on the campus, which handles multi-unit orders, upfit questions and the paperwork that comes with buying in a company name. Contractors driving over from Palm Springs and businesses up the I-10 corridor both get routed to the same people rather than to whoever happens to be open on the sales floor.

Section 179 comes up in nearly every commercial conversation, and the qualifying weight thresholds put most of this lineup in the discussion. That is a question for your tax professional, but the team can tell you the gross vehicle weight rating on any build you are considering. Details are on the fleet and commercial sales page.

Jessup Auto Plaza Buick GMC has run a truck business on this campus for twenty-five years and in the valley since 1938, and the commercial side is a real department rather than a desk in the corner. To see what is in stock across all four trucks, search new GMC inventory or browse the full new Buick and GMC lineup. Several configurations of each truck are typically on the ground.

Come drive two of them back to back — that comparison does more than any spec sheet. Jessup Auto Plaza Buick GMC is at 68111 E Palm Canyon Dr, Cathedral City, CA 92234. Call 442-268-0740 for sales or ask for the truck center directly.
